New Year is coming!

Hi there!  We're off to Kansas for a week of laughing with our families, eating lots and lots of food, and lounging around. To say I'm excited would be an understatement. I'm ready to s-l-o-w down, unplug, and spend time doing things I love with the people I love - mostly cooking, eating, and reading (I think mom's planned a spin class in there for good measure, as well).

I'll be taking a break next week from posting, but you can always catch up and see what we're up to (or cute photos of Lily) on my instagram

Some links to browse while I'm away...

Did you see the 60 Minutes piece on mindfulness? We found it fascinating. I've tried to meditate before and can never stop thinking of my to do list. Maybe I'll try again next week!

Made me laugh. Pretty much the best way to sum up Santacon.

Whoa.  Kansas City in the New York Times.  When (my) worlds collide. (Also that's our friend Kevin in the photo. Hey Kev!)

Things we learned from the Sony hack. Add to that list that North Korea was serious about not letting that movie get released.

So THIS is why I mess up so many song lyrics.

Currently reading. I really can't quit you, Liane Moriarty.

Lily's friend Oliver Lim in his dad's holiday card. Work it Oli!

And if all that ↑ wasn't enough to keep you occupied for a week - you can always go back and see what we did last winter break. (Here and here).

Wishing you and your family blessed, cheerful, and delightful holidays. Merry merry!

Happy Friday! It is officially coat season out there. Not just a cute little poncho or jacket, but full on bundle up-wrap your face-cover your head cold. We're headed to Dallas this weekend which normally would be a lovely break from the cold temps, but apparently it is even colder in Dallas than  it is in NYC!  In the 30s!  Thank ya polar vortex for that. While we won't get a hit of warm weather, we still plan to see a whole bunch of our friends who reside there, eat some good food, shop around and just have a little weekend escape. I've never been, so I'm excited to meet some nice Texans and see what the state is all about. ☺

Lots of links for the remainder of your weekend.  Enjoy! ↓

YES.

They'll never be as good as dogs. Here's why.

And if you didn't get enough Thanksgiving chatter yesterday, a few more:

→ Ina's tips (I do most of these, they help a ton!)

→ About dry brining (so much less messy than wet brining)

→ Apparently people really make these?

Currently reading. (Yep. Still on my Liane Moriarty kick).

The Mayo Battle (the condiment, not our sweet Lily Mayo).

I spy with my little eye on West Elm's instagram.

Stay warm out there people. Happy weekend!

happy halloween // friday finds

Happy Halloween!!

Lily has two costumes this year...

A Royals player (obvi) and a sweet little lady bug.

We have no Halloween-related plans (I'm not all that crazy about this holiday). Only thing on our books this weekend is a surprise evening I've arranged to knock him out of his Royals funk. Calling it "Make Al Happy Even Though The Royals Lost The World Series Evening". Still working on the title though.

For those of you going out tonight - be safe and hold hands. For those with little kiddos at home, have the best time.  I love kids at Halloween.

Finds from the week below. Enjoy.  ↓

Love this story.

Oh no. (I LOVE Fireball, btw.)

We should have done one of these for Lily.

I'd like to think KC would have reacted better than this.

Wow. A bit better than my french bulldog pumpkin...

On marriage. (YES!)

One of my goals in life - END ALL CLUTTER!

My kind of drinking game. "How easy was that?!"

Happy Halloween and Happy Weekend!

Happy Friday! And Happy World Series! Our plans this weekend revolve 100% around the Royals games. We thought long and hard about flying out to San Francisco for the Saturday game, but have decided to stay put and cheer them on from the East Coast. We are hoping and praying for three more Ws!

Other non-baseball plans include napping, baking, cooking, and chores. Oh, and avoiding Ebola. Fun times!

I could really use a getaway to this beautiful lake house.

LOVE this idea for family dinner. A great conversation starter for any group gathering.

Best part:  "I'm not a foodie, I'm an eatie." YES. (His new book looks funny!)

YES!

I couldn't put down this article. What a terrifying journey.

Two recipes that had me drooling - one and two.

Never forget. (I use "our pets' heads are falling off!" quite a bit.)

I love taking personality quizzes.  I got ENFJ. Totally accurate.

For my next snack attack.

That time our dog got 1,000+ likes. (Yes, I'm nuts. For further proof read this)

Happy Friday! We're headed to a pumpkin carving party this evening and are looking forward to a beautiful Saturday and a cold snugly, Sunday. Funny how much the weather dictates our plans. Wishing you a terrific fall weekend full of all the good things.

My imaginary fairy godmother, Ina making my favorite Bon Appetit Column

THIS was beyond annoying to read. I like (most of) this response.

And related to ↑ this is interesting and I loved Jenny's response.

We spent a good half hour trying this the other night.

Funny. And partly true. I mean, how am I supposed to go to spin class, the dog park, AND brunch all day? Adulthood is hard.

#TRUTH  (that is totally me)

We ate this all week long. So yummy.

Benjamin Moore just announced their color of the year for 2015. I like it - very calming.

Currently reading. I really love Liane Moriarty.

And finally, can we just take a moment to talk about the KANSAS CITY ROYALS going to the WORLD SERIES?!  Mind. Blown.
→ You know it's real when it's on E!News...
→ ... And NPR
→ ... And The Atlantic
→ ... And The Wall Street Journal (American Royal is our namesake? Who knew?)

Have a glorious weekend!

Happy Friday!  Is it me or has this week seemed so long. I legit thought it was Saturday when I woke up this morning. The air is crisp here in the city and it makes me want to prep for fall and spend time outdoors. A little of both are in the plans this weekend (along with watching more of this show). And I have got to do a serious closet inventory before I do my fall shopping. I end up having a lot of those "Oh! I forgot I had that!" moments. Wishing you a super weekend. Do something fun! (Like clean out your closet?)

Gems from the web this week are below. Have a good one! ↓

This is spot on. I love reading comments on recipes for this very reason.

Liking quite a few pieces from LC's affordable line for Kohls. Who knew.

And speaking of LC, I went to two drug stores last night trying to get my hands on this

Some new titles for your fall reading list. I think I might start this one.

Well this is depressing (unless you live in Missoula, Iowa City, or Omaha).

This StoryCorps had me in tears. What a tough, but noble job.

Thinking about these for Sunday Supper along with a soup. Delicious!

Happy weekend!

wedding kiss - nyc yellow cab

Hi friends! Sorry for the light content this week. This short week has me all thrown off - Wednesday night I convinced myself I could go to bed and not finish our Napa Recap post because I still had one more day, but then I woke up the next day and realized it was, in fact, Thursday and I was sufficiently confused and annoyed. But what I do know is that today is Friday and our dear friends Jim & Kyle are getting hitched tomorrow in NYC! They asked me to help them out and be their day-of-coordinator so my part kicks into high gear beginning this afternoon at the rehearsal. I'm pumped to put my OCD organization skills to work and more so to watch two seriously cool and good-hearted people tie the knot.

While I'm busy lining up groomsmen and bridesmaids, check out some links I'm loving from the web this week. ↓

This makes me so sad. Arthur's is our late night spot!

RIP Joan Rivers. I thought she was just hilarious.

Can't wait to see Little Green Notebook's home spread in the new issue of domino.

Men about to propose - you need this.

Ina just announced her full tour for her new book! See you Oct. 28 IG!

And then I bawled at my desk. So sad. So heroic.

Need to calm down? This will help.

What. Is. This. ??

Loving this navy skirt for fall.

Summer Over the City | The New Yorker
via

Happy Friday! It's kind of a bittersweet Friday no? The last Friday of Summer. Tuesday it'll be back to the grind, pick up the pace, actually go to work on a Friday. Rats. Oh well, let's not get bogged down in the end of summer. Think of fall as a time to set new goals, new routines, and wear some super cute sweaters.

We have few plans this weekend, but starting next weekend we're booked until October! So we'll be taking care of some things on our To Do list, celebrating our anniversary, and enjoying the slowness for what seems like the last time for awhile.

Hope you have a safe and lovey holiday weekend.  Here's what I'm loving from the web this week ↓:

Why you can't catch your own typo's. (And why so many slip through on TRR. I need an editor who's not myself!)

I love this so much. (Thanks Caroline!)

How texting appears in TV and film. I found it so interesting!

Lusting after this hat for fall.

I would totally see this movie.

dinner: the playbook

Make sure to read down to the end for a giveaway where you can win your own copy of Dinner: The Playbook!

I cook quite a bit. Especially during the week. I'd say I cook about four nights a week and we have one "leftover" night thrown in the mix. It's our way of sticking to our budget - by only dining out Friday and Saturday (especially with NYC restaurant prices - sheesh!). And while we've been eating at home five nights a week since we first moved NYC over six years ago, lately I've tried harder to make our meals from scratch. Less pre-packaged mixes filled with chemicals and preservatives, and more fresh foods prepared simply and smartly to allow us to eat fresh, healthy meals each week night.

Which is why I was elated when I saw on one of my favorite blogs, Dinner: A Love Story, that she had a new cookbook out (I already had her first book and use it weekly) that focused on preparing family meals that are fresh, fast, and easy. Jenny, the author, wrote on her blog that she and her publisher were seeking readers to test out her new book and do a "challenge" to cook at home more. I commented on the post and was chosen and shortly thereafter a "trade paperback original" copy of the Dinner: The Playbook was at my door.

I devoured the book. It was like Jenny was up in my head writing out my thoughts on the family meal. Jenny writes, "Sitting down to a meal together had always played a disproportionately large role in my relationship with my husband, Andy". Yes! That's me and Al! Jenny goes through how she and her husband maintained their dinners through having two babies and eventually two slightly picky kids. There's more of there family story in her first book, but this book is set out as a real game plan. It's not just about the ritual and calming effect of family dinner, but about how some days (most days it seems), "dinner, more than anything, just has to be...done."

...Make sure to read down to the end for a giveaway where you can win your own copy of Dinner: The Playbook!...

Some of my favorite tips and tricks from Dinner: The Playbook are:

Plan, plan, plan! On the same calendar as your week's activities (especially critical for those with children in various activities), plan your meals. If you know you have a late meeting or a soccer game until 8:30, plan an easier meal that day. But no matter what, plan for the week and then shop for the week. It will make your grocery shopping much easier when you know what you'll be making. I used my planner and little tabs to mark the recipes for each day of the week.

Prep, prep, prep! As soon as you get home from the grocery store, start prepping. This is where an extra 30 minutes to an hour can really pay off for the week. Wash your greens. Chop your veggies. Marinate chicken. Cook a side of barley or rice for the week. Got more time? Make your marinara sauce and dressings for the week. The more front-end prep you put in to it, the easier it will be that week.
^^ Weekend prep: washed and dried greens, homemade barbecue sauce, homemade marinara

Re-purpose, reuse, reinvent! When planning for the week, have your dinners and ingredients make sense and be reused from one meal to the next. So if you're making a batch of marinara for chicken parm meatballs, save some and use it for whole wheat pizzas. Jenny does a great job giving a few examples of this on pages 28-39 where she gives 10 weeks of meal plans.

Get the whole family involved! Jenny uses this as a way to help picking eaters and get the family behind the idea of eating home-cooked meals each night. In my case, Al was my "kid". I'd have him come to the store with me and help decide the menus. We had plans for him to cook one of the easier meals (Shrimp Rolls page 74), but somehow that never occurred ☺. By getting the entire family - kids and spouses - involved it takes the pressure off of one person and helps create that ritual that makes family dinner so nice.

Recipe layouts! This is less of a tip or trick, but something I LOVED about this book. The recipes are arranged in an easy to read manner. Ingredients on one side, steps on the other. All on one page. And my most favorite part was little tips underneath each recipe for how you can get ahead for dinner that night. What you can do the morning of (as simple as setting out the pots, pans, and canned ingredients you'll need) to what you can do the weekend before (make your dressing or sauce). She also lists what sides (pages 154 - 162) go well with each meal.

And here are some of the meals we made from Dinner: The Playbook. Happy to report we added every single one to our "make again" list.

...Make sure to read down to the end for a giveaway where you can win your own copy of Dinner: The Playbook!)...

Grilled Thai Steak Salad (page 182)

Cornmeal-Crusted Fish with Homemade Tartar Sauce (page 108)

Black Bean and Goat Cheese Quesadillas (page 70)

Pasta with Roasted Tomatoes and Spinach (page 80)

Chicken BLTs (page 110)

Basic Barbecue Roasted Chicken (page 72)

Roasted Salmon and Asparagus with Spicy Mayo and Chives (page 66)

Sloppy Joes (page 98)

Chicken Parm Meatballs (page 134)

Dinner: The Playbook hits shelves TODAY! You must go get it. For all of you with kids that are just going back to school, what a perfect time to start your own challenge to cook meals at home that don't come from a box. And for those of us without children, the fall always gives me that sort of back-to-the-grind and set-up-new-routines feeling. A perfect time for The Playbook

And thanks to the lovely people at Random House, one lucky reader can win their own copy of Dinner: The Playbook. All you have to do is leave a comment on this blog post by clicking the comment link down there ↓. Tell me how you plan to use the Dinner: The Playbook, or a good tip for weeknight meals, or what family dinner means to you. Anything! Just leave a comment on The Rose Record between now and Monday, September 1st and you'll be entered into the drawing. The winner will be contacted on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Thanks to Jenny and the team at Random House for letting me be a part of such a fun experience. I truly stand behind the messages in Dinner: The Playbook - that family dinner matters and can be stress free and I'm happy to support it.

friday finds

Happy Friday! Whew, we made it through a five day work week! We have a fun weekend planned with one of Al's best friends and his wife who are visiting us. Lots of sights, gems, and food to show. Should be a great time.

Enjoy your Friday. Get outside! And if you have a french bulldog, wave it in the air like you just don't care...or something.  I'll stop rambling. Finds are below. ↓

••••••••••

Lots of good TV stuff to discuss. One - TV premiere dates for next season. Two - the Emmy nominations were just announced!

Made me laugh. It does look very intense! Especially the roller. Oh man if you get a bad roller, your burrito is ruined.

We're so going to this

Sneaky. And informative. Pretty bad odds that I see a pool this summer.

New York Philharmonic's Concerts in the Park series. Such a neat experience.

This is everything. We could not stop laughing at work.

Well, this exists.

More love for Olivia Palermo. Love her.

Currently reading. (Just finished this. Highly recommend it!)

And leaving you with a little pep talk. I love this so much.

Have a great weekend!

weekend recap

Hello! How was the weekend? Ours was really, really great. Looking back on it, it might be one of my favorite weekends in a long time. It just made me feel good, if that makes any sense. Here are a few photos...

Friday we headed to the New York Philharmonic to see Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto. It was a beautiful night and the show was spectacular.  The first portion was a triple concerto with Bronfman on piano, Carter Brey on cello, and Glenn Dicterow on violin. It was so neat to see the three of them play together all making eye contact at certain moments as a way to communicate to each other. Also cool because it was one of Directerow's final concerts; he's retiring from the philharmonic after 34 years.  The final performance was Bonfman alone performing with the symphony. My goodness that man is talented. We had great seats and could see his facial expressions. He played with such passion; it was really awesome to watch.

^^ A beautiful and buzzing Lincoln Center.
^^ You can see Bronfman behind the piano taking in his applause.

Meandered our way to Sushi Damo for late night dinner and drinks. Think we like avocado on our rolls?

Post symphony and sushi selfie. I had to. It's one of my favorite dresses.

Saturday started at the dog park. We like going to the West Chelsea Water Park when it's hot so we can splash Lily in the pools to cool her down. She seems to like the water more and more, but she'd never get in on her own, even when her friends jump on in.

^^ See, jumped right out after we put her in. Little rabbit.
Later we met friends on the Lobster Boat! What a fun experience. No ticket needed, no reservations, just go (wait in a little line) and then board the boat to order beers, wine, and lobster rolls from the bar. Every three hours, it goes on a little 30 minute cruise around the Hudson. Beautiful evening with friends. Just make sure to not leave your phone plugged in behind the bar and then sprint back two avenues to retrieve it before the boat took off for another cruise. Wups!

Proof that Al and I are horrible at taking photos together. #fail

Finally got a decent one. Only took 65 tries. I'll forgive his disdain for taking photos since he's so cute.

Also, happy PRIDE!

Sunday these two would NOT get out of bed.

It was fine, though. I unloaded the groceries and prepped for the week. Does anyone else hate washing and drying greens as much as me? More on my meal prep to come this week - a fun little project I'm a part of for Dinner A Love Story's new book.

Up on the sun deck all by myself. This is a huge win for urban tanning in a high rise building.

All those yummy veggies I prepped made for a delicious supper. Grilled Thai Steak Salad. So fresh. The first of 30 (yes 30!!) recipes I'll be cooking this month from Dinner The Playbook.

And that about wraps it up. A feel-good, New York weekend. Here's to a short week and the 4th of July holiday! Woop! Lily's excited about it!
